Piazza Mercato

Our foundation is traditional. From slices of cured meat you can’t find at your typical
deli to generous serves of slow-cooked ragu with house-made pasta, our
unfussy food centres on fresh ingredients and flavour.

Piazza mercato

If you’ve ever waited for a table at Napoli Centrale on Newcastle’s King Street or lined up for pistachio gelato at Popolo across the road, you’ll love our inner-city addition to the Italian Group family.

As the head of the ‘family’, chef Alfonso Muras has been inspired by the ancient, bustling market square at the heart of the Mercato neighbourhood in his birthplace of Naples. Piazza Mercato will take you seamlessly from breakfast to dinner, and beyond, with a menu driven by the grill, shareable Italian snacks, and house-made pasta. Fun, vibrant and relaxed, Piazza Mercato is a place for everyone. And where else in Newcastle can you order bruschetta until midnight?

Chef Jerome Dionne heads the large open-plan kitchen, which features a street-level deli offering coffee, cannoli, and panini for a quick takeaway breakfast or lunch. But the heart of the kitchen is the grill, and the seared swordfish is a popular dinner favourite.

The bar, stage and late-night dance floor set our venue apart. “I think of Piazza Mercato as a meeting place for food and conversation, as well as culture and ideas,” says Alfonso. “It’s about neighbourhood. We want to create a place where people come together.”
